A professional dental cleaning is more than polishing away visible stain. At Asok Montri Dental Clinic, a cleaning appointment begins with an assessment of the teeth and gums so we can distinguish routine plaque and tartar removal from care that may require deep cleaning or treatment by a periodontal dentist.
Our clinic provides dental check-ups, cleaning, scaling and deep cleaning in central Bangkok. We are on Asoke Montri Road, close to Asoke BTS Station and Sukhumvit MRT Station, and we welcome both local and international patients.
What happens at a dental cleaning appointment?
The dentist first checks the mouth for concerns such as tooth decay, gum inflammation, deposits, damaged restorations and areas that are difficult to clean. The scope of the appointment depends on these findings. Professional cleaning removes plaque and hardened tartar that cannot be removed fully with a toothbrush and floss at home.
Scaling instruments are used to remove deposits from the teeth. Polishing may be used where appropriate to smooth the cleaned surfaces and reduce external stain. You may also receive individual advice on brushing, interdental cleaning and areas that need more attention.
If there are signs of gum disease, routine cleaning may not be enough. The dentist will explain whether deeper cleaning, additional periodontal assessment or a series of appointments is recommended.
Routine scaling and deep cleaning are different
Routine scaling is intended for deposits around teeth in a generally maintainable mouth. Deep cleaning addresses deposits and inflammation below the gum line when periodontal disease is present. It may be planned by area and may require more than one visit depending on the condition of the gums.
A quotation for routine cleaning should not be treated as a guaranteed price for every periodontal condition. The dentist needs to assess the amount and location of tartar, gum health and the treatment required. If deeper care is indicated, we will explain the reason and the proposed scope before proceeding.
When should you arrange a check-up?
Book an appointment if you notice bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, swelling, tenderness, visible tartar or a change in the way a tooth feels. Gum disease can also develop with few obvious symptoms, which is why regular dental check-ups are useful even when nothing hurts.
The appropriate interval is individual. It depends on your oral health, previous gum disease, daily cleaning, smoking, medical history and other risk factors. We recommend the next visit after examining your mouth rather than using one schedule for every patient.
What should a cleaning quotation include?
When comparing dental cleaning costs in Bangkok, ask exactly what has been assessed and quoted. Useful questions include:
Is the quotation for routine scaling and cleaning or for deep cleaning?
Is a dental examination included or charged separately?
Are dental X-rays recommended, and are they included?
Will the treatment require one visit or several appointments?
Has gum disease been diagnosed or is a periodontal consultation needed?
Is polishing included where clinically appropriate?
The lowest advertised figure may apply only to a simple appointment. A meaningful quotation reflects the condition being treated and the services actually included.
Cleaning before whitening or restorative treatment
Patients sometimes book a cleaning because they are considering whitening, veneers, crowns or dental implants. Cleaning and whitening are separate procedures. Removing external deposits may improve the appearance of the teeth, but it does not bleach their natural internal colour.
Healthy gums also matter when restorative treatment is being planned. Inflammation and deposits can affect comfort, oral hygiene and the clinical environment. We may therefore recommend stabilising gum health before moving to elective cosmetic or restorative work.
Planning a cleaning while visiting Bangkok
If you are an expatriate living in Bangkok or are visiting for a short stay, tell us how long you will be available. A routine appointment may be straightforward, but deep cleaning or treatment of additional findings may need more time. We will explain the priority of each finding so you can make an informed decision.
Bring a list of relevant medical conditions and current medicines. Diabetes, smoking, previous periodontal treatment and medicines that affect bleeding or saliva may be relevant to your care. Do not stop prescribed medicine unless the prescribing clinician has told you to do so.
After your appointment
Mild gum tenderness or tooth sensitivity can occur after deposits are removed, particularly when the gums were inflamed. Follow the care instructions provided at your visit. Contact the clinic if you experience symptoms that are severe, worsening or different from what was explained.
Professional cleaning supports daily care but does not replace it. Brush thoroughly, clean between the teeth and attend the review interval recommended for your oral condition.
Frequently asked questions
Does every cleaning require an X-ray?
No. The dentist decides whether an X-ray is needed based on the examination, history and areas that cannot be assessed directly.
Will cleaning whiten my teeth?
Cleaning can remove plaque, tartar and some external stain. It does not change the natural internal colour in the same way as a whitening procedure.
Can I receive deep cleaning in one visit?
That depends on the extent of the condition and your treatment plan. Some cases are divided into more than one appointment.
