Jaw pain, a click when you open your mouth, or difficulty chewing can be unsettling. These symptoms do not all have the same cause. At Asok Montri Dental Clinic, a TMD consultation begins with your history and an examination rather than a treatment chosen from the sound of the joint alone.

TMD refers to a group of conditions affecting the jaw joints, the muscles used for chewing or both. Our clinic provides TMD and occlusion care in Bangkok. We aim to identify what is bothering you, how it affects daily life and which next step is appropriate.

When is a consultation useful?

Arrange an assessment if jaw pain persists, chewing becomes uncomfortable, your jaw feels stiff, opening is limited, or the joint locks. A painful click or a change in the way the teeth meet is also worth discussing. A click without pain or limitation may not require treatment, but the full context matters.

Tell us if symptoms started after an injury, if they are getting worse, or if you cannot open or close your mouth normally. A sudden severe problem may need prompt care rather than a routine consultation slot.

What we ask about

We will ask where the discomfort is, when it began, what makes it worse or better, and whether it is constant or comes and goes. Mention headaches, pain near the ear, tooth pain, recent dental work and any history of clenching or grinding. Sleep, stress and daily habits may also be relevant. These questions help us understand the pattern; they do not mean that one habit is automatically the cause.

If you have already used pain medicine, a night guard or another treatment, bring the details. Tell us what helped and what did not. Existing scans or dental records may be useful if they are available.

What happens during the examination?

The dentist may check how far and how comfortably you can open, whether the jaw deviates, where tenderness is present and how the joints move. We may also examine the chewing muscles, teeth, restorations and bite. Other dental or medical problems can produce pain in the same area, so the consultation is not limited to listening for a click.

Imaging is considered only when it may answer a particular question. It is not automatically needed for everyone with jaw pain. We will explain the reason if an image or referral is recommended.

Why a diagnosis matters before treatment

Our TMD service page describes joint disorders, muscle disorders and headaches associated with TMD. These categories can overlap, and a person may have more than one contributing factor. The treatment plan should reflect the findings rather than assume that every patient needs a bite change or an appliance.

Conservative measures may be discussed first, including ways to reduce strain, changes to habits, medicines when appropriate, muscle relaxation approaches or an oral appliance. The suitable options depend on your health and diagnosis. A splint may help some patients, but it should be prescribed and adjusted for a defined reason. Do not buy an appliance and use it as a substitute for assessment if symptoms are persistent or worsening.

Questions to ask about the plan

  • What findings explain my pain or limited movement?

  • Could a tooth or another condition be contributing?

  • What can I do safely while we monitor the symptoms?

  • Is an appliance recommended, and what is its purpose?

  • How will we know whether treatment is helping?

  • When should I return or seek further care?

Ask whether the proposed quotation covers the consultation, any imaging, an appliance if prescribed and follow-up adjustments. These are different parts of care and may not all be included in one fee.

Planning care if you live abroad

If you are in Bangkok for a limited period, tell us your travel dates and whether another dentist or clinician is already treating the problem. TMD symptoms may need review over time. We can discuss what can be assessed during your visit and what follow-up might need to continue after you leave Thailand.

Frequently asked questions

Does every jaw click need treatment?

No. A click without pain or restriction may not need treatment. A dentist can assess it in the context of your other symptoms.

Does jaw pain mean my bite is wrong?

Not necessarily. Jaw pain can involve joints, muscles or other conditions. We do not choose a treatment from the bite alone.

Will I need a night guard?

Only if the assessment suggests that an appliance is appropriate for your case. We will explain its purpose and how it should be used.
