Dental Implants vs Bridges: How to Choose

Clarify the terminology. An implant is a support placed in the jaw. A bridge is a restoration replacing missing teeth and may be supported by natural teeth or implants. Ask which type of bridge is being discussed: these terms are not always mutually exclusive alternatives.
What should be assessed? Ask the dentist to explain the condition of teeth beside the gap, gums, supporting bone and bite. Discuss whether neighbouring teeth already need restoration and what each option would mean for them. A photograph of another person's result cannot establish your own suitability.
Compare the whole plan. Discuss appointment stages, expected timing, cleaning, follow-up and possible maintenance, not only the initial fee. Implant placement involves surgery and healing and is not suitable for everyone. FDA guidance identifies overall health and smoking as relevant considerations. No option should be described as risk-free.
Questions to bring. What other choices are available? What are the implications of postponing treatment? How would I clean each restoration? Who should I contact if there is a problem? Tell the team early about concerns relating to surgery, travel or cost so these can be considered during planning.
