After whitening, patients often ask us how to keep the result looking fresh. At Asok Montri Dental Clinic, our advice starts with the treatment you actually received and the instructions supplied with it. A routine that is easy to follow is more useful than a long list of rules copied from a different whitening product.

Whitening is not a permanent colour change. The NHS patient information explains that results can fade and that habits such as smoking and regularly drinking staining beverages affect tooth colour. We cannot promise one fixed duration for every smile. What we can do is help you understand the follow-up questions that belong in your own plan.

Keep the instructions for your treatment

Before leaving, check that you understand any advice about food, drinks and oral care immediately after treatment. Ask how long an instruction applies and what to do if you are unsure. Internet advice often mixes different products and procedures, so avoid turning a general suggestion into a strict rule without checking.

Make ordinary oral care the foundation

A brighter shade is not a substitute for keeping teeth and gums healthy. Continue the daily cleaning routine your dentist recommends and keep regular dental appointments. Ask whether any part of your routine needs adjusting for existing crowns, fillings, sensitivity or other findings from the examination.

At your next visit, bring up areas that are difficult to clean or changes you have noticed. It is more helpful to explain a particular concern than to assume every visible mark means the whitening has failed. A dental review can address the condition of the teeth as well as their appearance.

Be realistic about coffee, tea and smoking

Tell us about your usual habits so the advice fits daily life. If you drink coffee throughout the day, say that. If you smoke, discuss it openly. The aim is to make an informed plan, not to agree to a routine during the appointment that you already know you cannot maintain.

Ask which changes matter most for your circumstances and which instructions are specific to the period just after treatment. We do not give every patient an indefinite “white food only” rule or promise that one dietary change will preserve a shade permanently. Keep the discussion tied to your treatment and follow-up.

Do not decide on a top-up from one photograph

A smile can look different under bathroom lighting, daylight and a phone flash. Before concluding that the colour has changed, consider whether you are comparing similar photographs. Filters and exposure changes make that comparison less useful. At a review, ask how the shade will be assessed rather than relying only on a screen.

If you want further whitening, contact the clinic before restarting an old course. Tell us which product you have, when it was supplied and what you have already used. Ask whether the teeth and gums need reassessment and whether the existing kit remains appropriate. Do not assume that more frequent treatment produces a better long-term result.

What if your teeth feel sensitive?

Temporary sensitivity can occur with whitening, as described by the American Dental Association. Report symptoms rather than extending or intensifying treatment on your own. Tell the team which teeth are affected, when it happens and which products you are using.

If a home product is uncomfortable, contact your dentist for instructions before continuing. Do not take reassurance from someone else's experience as proof that your symptoms have the same cause. The follow-up plan should reflect what is happening in your mouth.

Before travelling home

Keep the clinic's contact details and ask how to raise questions after the visit. If you plan another trip to Bangkok, do not book a top-up solely because a set number of months has passed. Discuss whether it is needed and suitable first.

Our whitening options and cost guide covers the initial treatment discussion. For aftercare, the priorities are simpler: understand your instructions, maintain routine dental care and ask before adding more whitening.
