A toothache does not automatically mean you need a root canal. At Asok Montri Dental Clinic, we first examine the tooth, ask about your symptoms and use imaging when it helps us understand what is happening. Root canal treatment is considered when the pulp inside a tooth is infected or irreversibly damaged and the tooth can reasonably be retained.
Our clinic offers endodontic care in Bangkok. We also provide restorative dentistry, so the discussion includes what the tooth will need after the canal treatment is complete.
When should you arrange an examination?
Contact a dentist if you have persistent tooth pain, pain when biting, swelling, a recurring gum spot near a tooth or a tooth that has changed colour after an injury. These signs can have several causes. The dentist needs to identify the affected tooth and decide whether the problem involves the pulp, the surrounding tissues or something else.
If swelling is spreading, you have a fever or you feel unwell, seek prompt clinical advice. Do not wait for a cosmetic or routine appointment to discuss symptoms that are getting worse.
How we assess the tooth
We review the history, examine the tooth and nearby gums, and check how the tooth responds to appropriate tests. Dental X-rays can help show the roots and surrounding bone. Our clinic also has CT scanning technology, which may be useful in selected endodontic cases when ordinary views do not answer the clinical question. A CT scan is not required for every root canal.
We will explain whether root canal treatment is appropriate, whether another procedure is needed first, and whether the tooth is restorable. A heavily broken tooth may not benefit from treating the canals if there is too little sound tooth structure to support a lasting restoration.
What happens during root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment is directed at the space inside the tooth that contains the pulp. The clinician accesses the canals, removes infected or damaged tissue, cleans and shapes the canal system, and seals it. The tooth then needs a suitable final restoration to protect it and return it to function.
The exact steps depend on the tooth's anatomy, the extent of infection and whether any previous root canal work has been done. Our website describes endodontic surgery as a separate option for selected cases in which infection persists. Surgery is not a routine part of every root canal plan.
How many visits will I need?
Some teeth can be treated in one appointment, while others need more than one visit. Molars can have more complex canal anatomy than many front teeth. Infection, retreatment, time needed for assessment and the type of final restoration can also affect the schedule.
If you are visiting Bangkok from overseas, tell us when you leave. We can discuss a provisional sequence, but the confirmed number of visits follows examination. Plan enough time for the final restoration or ask what temporary stage may be used and how follow-up will be arranged.
Will I need a crown afterward?
Not every root-treated tooth receives the same restoration. The choice depends on how much tooth remains, where the tooth sits in the mouth, your bite and the size of any existing filling. A crown may be recommended when the tooth needs broader protection, while a more conservative restoration may be suitable in other circumstances.
We will discuss the final restoration when planning the root canal. This matters for both cost and timing. Completing the canal treatment without a clear plan for restoring the tooth can leave an important part of the care unresolved.
What affects the cost in Bangkok?
A meaningful quotation should distinguish the endodontic procedure from the final restoration. Ask which tooth is being treated, whether imaging is included, whether the fee covers one or several visits, and whether a crown, filling, post or temporary restoration is quoted separately. A complex molar or retreatment may require a different scope from a simpler case.
We will provide a case-specific quotation after assessment. An online price cannot confirm how many canals your tooth has or whether additional treatment is required.
After treatment
Some tenderness may occur after treatment, especially if the tooth was painful beforehand. Follow the care instructions provided by your dentist and avoid assuming a temporary restoration can be used indefinitely. Contact us if pain or swelling worsens or if the temporary filling breaks or comes out.
Even after treatment is complete, the tooth and surrounding gums still need daily cleaning and regular dental review. A root canal treats a problem inside the tooth; it does not remove the need for long-term care.
Frequently asked questions
Does every painful tooth need a root canal?
No. Pain has several possible causes. An examination is needed before choosing treatment.
Is root surgery the same as a root canal?
No. Endodontic surgery is a separate procedure considered in selected cases, such as persistent problems around the root tip.
Can I finish treatment during a short Bangkok visit?
Possibly, but the number of appointments and restoration stages depend on the individual tooth. Contact us before making fixed travel plans.
