When one tooth looks darker than the teeth beside it, a general whitening appointment may not answer the main problem. If that tooth has had root canal treatment, tell us when you contact Asok Montri Dental Clinic. We first need to understand its treatment history and present condition, then discuss the appearance you would like to change.

A colour difference on its own does not tell us which treatment is appropriate. We would not diagnose the tooth from a photograph or assume that whitening the whole smile will make a single dark tooth match. Start with an assessment rather than buying another product to test on it.

Is the visible surface natural tooth or a restoration?

This is an important distinction. A root-treated tooth may have a filling, crown or other restoration. Whitening will not change restorative material in the same way as natural tooth structure. The American Dental Association's whitening guidance explains why existing restorations need to be considered when planning a colour change.

If you do not know whether the tooth has a crown, there is no need to guess. Tell us what you remember about the treatment and bring any records you have. A useful first description is simply which tooth concerns you, what looks different and when you noticed it.

Bring the history, not just a close-up

The following details help us make the consultation more specific:

  • When and where the root canal treatment was completed.

  • Whether a crown or filling was placed afterwards.

  • Whether the colour has been stable or has changed recently.

  • Any discomfort, swelling or change when biting.

  • Previous injury to the tooth, if known.

  • Whitening or cosmetic treatment you have already tried.

Bring old dental images if you can obtain them easily. You should not delay contacting a dentist just because you cannot find every record. A photograph taken without filters may help explain the visible concern, but it cannot establish the health of the root or the quality of an old restoration.

Separate the health question from the colour question

At the appointment, ask what needs to be assessed before cosmetic treatment is considered. If there is a separate dental problem, understand that finding and its proposed management first. Booking whitening should not prevent you from mentioning symptoms because you think they belong to a different appointment.

The NHS whitening information emphasises checking that teeth and gums are healthy before whitening. For your own tooth, ask the dentist to explain which findings relate to health and which relate to appearance. Those discussions may lead to different next steps.

What about whitening inside the tooth?

You may encounter the term internal bleaching while searching online. The ADA describes it as a professional approach used in selected circumstances for non-vital teeth. It is not the same procedure as placing an ordinary home whitening gel around the outside of a tooth.

Our published aesthetic service information confirms in-office Zoom and home whitening, but does not confirm a specific internal-bleaching service. Ask the clinic about suitability and availability rather than assuming it is included in a standard whitening appointment. We do not offer instructions for attempting it yourself.

Agree on the appearance you want to improve

Is the concern one tooth that stands out, the whole smile being dark, or a crown that no longer matches? Be specific. Ask what the proposed option is expected to change, what might remain different and how the outcome would be reviewed. Avoid treating a shade shown on a screen as an exact promise.

If restorative treatment is discussed, request its own explanation and quotation. You should know whether it addresses a structural finding, appearance, or both. There is no reason to commit to several procedures simply because the first online search produced several treatment names.

Planning a visit to our Bangkok clinic

When enquiring, describe this as a dark root-treated tooth rather than only requesting whitening. Share your travel dates if you are visiting from overseas. Leave time for assessment and a discussion of what can reasonably be arranged during the trip.

For overall whitening choices, our Zoom and home whitening comparison is a useful starting point. For one dark tooth, the next step is understanding the tooth itself before choosing a way to change its colour.
